Plumbing and gas safety: what is really happening behind your walls

A badly vented gas heater, a trap that empties itself, a missing check valve: three invisible faults that cost lives in Algeria every winter. This guide explains the physics behind those risks and the rules that remove them, as applied in the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and North American practice.

Why plumbing is first and foremost a safety trade

People judge a plumber on what they can see: a straight tap, tidy tiling. Yet most of the work disappears the moment the walls are closed up. A drinking water pipe crossing a waste line, a flue running downhill, a trap that has emptied itself — none of it is visible, and none of it can be smelled, until the day it is too late.

That is why entire countries have codified this trade. The International Plumbing Code (IPC) and, in Ontario, the building code backed by CSA standards, are not bureaucratic paperwork: they are accidents compressed into rules. Every clause corresponds to something that once went badly wrong somewhere.

Gas water heaters: the rules that save lives

The typical accident in Algeria is always the same: a gas heater fitted in a small closed room, an improvised flue, and a winter night when every opening gets sealed. Combustion eats the oxygen in the room, the appliance starts producing carbon monoxide, and the occupants fall asleep.

1. The appliance needs air, not just gas

Burning gas consumes oxygen. A natural-draught appliance — the classic instant water heater — takes that air from the room it stands in. It therefore needs enough volume and two permanent, non-closable openings: a low grille bringing fresh air in and a high grille letting air out. Blocking those grilles in winter to keep the cold out is the exact move that kills.

2. The flue must rise, always

Flue gases leave because they are hot and therefore less dense than the surrounding air: that is thermal draught. It is a weak engine. The vent connector must rise continuously towards the terminal — North American practice requires an upward slope of at least a quarter of an inch per foot, roughly 2%. One downward section, one elbow too many, one long horizontal run, and the flue gases come back into the room.

3. Not in a bedroom, not in a sealed bathroom

A natural-draught appliance has no place in a bedroom or in an unventilated bathroom. North American codes prohibit it explicitly for non-sealed appliances. A room-sealed appliance — one that draws its air from outside and discharges outside — changes the picture entirely, and is the option to prefer in any modern home.

4. A carbon monoxide alarm is not a luxury

CO is colourless, odourless, and its density is almost identical to air: it mixes everywhere, it neither rises nor sinks. No human sense can detect it. In Ontario a CO alarm is mandatory near sleeping areas in any home with a fuel-burning appliance. An alarm costs less than a call-out; put one in the hallway outside the bedrooms.

5. Winter makes everything worse

Three effects stack up in winter: openings get sealed, the kitchen hood and extractor fans put the home under negative pressure and can reverse the flue draught, and wind on a badly sited terminal can push flue gases back down. That is why a pre-winter check is not a sales formality.

Smell of gas: the exact sequence

Do not touch any switch, doorbell or phone indoors — one spark is enough.

Close the gas isolation valve, open the windows, get everyone out.

Once outside and at a distance, call the emergency services (Civil Protection, 14 in Algeria) and your gas supplier.

Do not go back in until a professional has checked the installation.

Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning

Headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness — and above all: several people in the same home affected at the same time, pets included.

Symptoms improve outdoors and return when you go back inside.

If that happens: open up, get out immediately, call the emergency services. Do not look for the cause yourself.

Understanding gases: three densities, three behaviours

Gas safety becomes logical as soon as you look at density relative to air. This is elementary fluid mechanics, and it dictates where a ventilation grille goes and where an alarm goes.

Protecting drinking water: backflow

The drinking water main is under pressure, so we assume water can only travel one way. That assumption fails the moment pressure drops: a supply cut, a main being drained, a fire crew drawing a heavy flow in the street. At that moment the main sucks. Anything sitting in a liquid at the far end of a hose travels back up it.

There are two mechanisms. Back-siphonage, when main pressure falls below the pressure at the outlet. And back-pressure, when a connected installation — boiler, pump, irrigation system — pushes harder than the main.

The most common cases in an Algiers home

The basic rule

The most reliable protection is also the simplest: the air gap. The tap outlet must sit above the highest possible level of the receptacle — typically by at least twice the outlet diameter. That is precisely why a basin tap never reaches down into the bowl.

Where an air gap is impossible, a mechanical device does the job: a check valve, a vacuum breaker, or a backflow preventer for higher-risk connections such as boiler filling.

Drain smells: traps and venting

Every fixture has a trap: a bend holding a small quantity of water. That water seal — typically 40 to 100 mm deep — is the only barrier between your bathroom and the sewer. If it disappears, sewer gases travel freely into the room.

Why a water seal disappears

The answer is venting. A soil stack must be carried up through the roof so the system stays at atmospheric pressure: air enters from above and water falls without creating a vacuum. Removing that vent because it takes up space is the most widespread mistake in uncontrolled construction.

Water hammer: when the walls start banging

You close a mixer tap and a dull thud runs through the wall. That is not harmless: it is a pressure wave. Moving water has momentum; when a column of water is stopped abruptly, its kinetic energy converts into a surge that can reach several times the working pressure and travel through the whole system.

The damage is gradual: seals fatigue, joints work loose, and a leak shows up months later inside a partition. Three causes almost always combine.

Low pressure and uneven distribution

The classic symptom in an Algiers apartment block: good flow on the ground floor, a dribble on the top floor. Three possible causes, and they must be told apart before anyone spends money.

  1. Height: every 10 metres of rise costs about 1 bar of pressure. On a five-storey building there is almost nothing left at the top if incoming pressure is weak. The answer is a properly set booster pump, not a bigger pipe.
  2. Sizing and friction losses: a system that is too narrow, too long and full of elbows dissipates pressure as friction. Here the sizing calculation is genuinely what was missing.
  3. Scale and filters: on hard water, aerators, shower hoses and tap cartridges silt up within a few years. Always check this first: it is the cheapest possibility.

Repeat blockages: treat the cause, not the symptom

An unblocking job that has to be repeated every six months is not a repair, it is a subscription. When a blockage keeps coming back in the same place, there is a structural cause.

The right approach is to inspect, find where the trouble starts and correct the geometry of the pipework. More expensive once, cheaper than three times.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a gas water heater myself?

No. The gas connection, the ventilation sizing and the flue all put lives at stake. In Ontario this work is reserved for a licensed gas technician, separate from the plumber. The principle is the same everywhere: have the appliance fitted by a professional and checked every year.

My gas heater has run for ten years — should I worry?

Age itself is not the problem; fouling and changes to the home are. A scaled heat exchanger, a grille blocked during a renovation, a powerful new extractor hood: an installation that was correct ten years ago may not be today. An annual pre-winter check answers the question.

How do I know whether my drinking water is protected from backflow?

If there is no visible device between the main and your risk points, it is not protected. Look at the higher-risk connections: boiler filling, garden watering, pool, water softener. If there is no visible device between the main and those installations, there is no protection. It is a quick check and we do it as standard during a diagnosis.

Do smells always mean an empty trap?

Usually, but not always. A missing stack vent, a failed WC outlet seal or a washing machine connected without a trap produce exactly the same symptom. We identify the source before breaking anything open.

Is an arrestor enough to stop the banging?

It helps, but it does not fix an underlying cause. If flow velocity is too high because pipes are undersized, the arrestor softens the noise without removing the stress on the joints. We check sizing and clipping first.
